Do you need planning permission for a conservatory?

Having a conservatory built on the side of your home is one of the best ways to add extra space and value to your property. Often people are uncertain on whether they need planning permission for conservatories. UK planning laws made by the Government in May 2019 has made whole process much easier to understand.

So, do you need planning permission for a conservatory?

The law states to “build on, or modify, the use of land or buildings in the UK you are required by law to obtain Planning Permission”. But in most cases planning permission is NOT necessary for a conservatory because adding one to your home is usually allowed under ‘permitted development’ rules.

UK law now state that terraced and semi-detached homes can make additions up to 6m without planning permission. Detached houses can now add large structures up to 8m without planning permission.

So, if your conservatory will abide by these laws then you not require planning permission, but we always advise to check with your local authority first to make sure.
