Garage Door Trends over time

Once considered a luxury, garage doors are now seen on millions of properties throughout the UK. How have garage doors and their mechanisms changed over time? Let’s take a look.

The earliest doors attached to ‘Carriage Houses’, a separate structure similar to a barn, were equipped with doors that swing outwards. The first introduction to the public of an upward swinging mechanism wasn’t until 1921. The most obvious advantage was the room saved compared to the previous versions. An issue that did present itself was that some doors were ornate and heavy, making them hard to lift and lower.

Garage doors with electric motors were first introduced in the first half of the 1970s. Initially a luxury, the 1980s saw a mainstream introduction of remote-operated units. This reflected the change in cars over time. Just as cars were using modern solutions, it made sense that car enthusiasts’ tips would include mechanised doors.
